giving more attention on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues in RMG: Danish Ambassador
Danish Ambassador in Dhaka Winnie Estrup Petersen on Tuesday said that there is no alternative to ensure sustainable development in the country’s RMG (Readymade Garments) as the industry is facing growing challenges.
“The RMG sector is very important for Bangladesh’s economy as a large number of workers are leading their lives through working in the sector,” said the ambassador while inaugurating a three-day International Scientific Conference in Dhaka.
Ahsanullah University of Science & Technology (AUST) and Aalborg University jointly organised the 3-day conference titled “Sustainability of global garment industry” at AUST campus where around 150 national and international researchers will present their research papers and works.
Addressing the inaugural function, the Danish ambassador also stressed the need for giving more attention on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues in the sector which she said may help develop the workers skill as well the industry to flourish.
Praising the working environment of RMG industries in Bangladesh, she also said the country by this time has an example to others as a leading world apparel exporter.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) vice president Mohammad Nasir said Bangladesh has been able to ensure safe working environment at the country’s RMG factories through taking various work plans in the sector. “We are also working on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues,” he added.
AUST Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. A.M.M. Safiullah presided over the inaugural session while Alberg University Prof Peter Hasle, AUST Board of Trustees Chairman Kazi Rafiqul Alam, Pro-VC Prof. Dr. Kazi Shariful Alam, Aalborg-AUST Research Project Leader Prof Dr. Md. Amanullah and Prof. Dr. Lal Mohan Baral also spoke among others.
Later Danish Ambassador Winnie Estrup Petersen handed over certificates and crests to 12 garment factories for their contribution in research and innivation.
The 12 RMG factories are MasTrade International Garment Ltd., Amantex Ltd., Northern Fashion Ltd., Mawna Fashion Ltd., East West Industrial Park, Pimkie Apparels Ltd., GMS Composite Knitting Ind. Ltd., DEKKO Readywear Ltd., Fashion Step Ltd., Capital Fashions Ltd., Alema Textiles Ltd. and Energypac Fashions Ltd.
